Why Would Anyone Choose Death

For September 24, 2022

Deuteronomy 30:19

...נָתַ֣תִּי לְפָנֶ֔יךָ הַבְּרָכָ֖ה וְהַקְּלָלָ֑ה וּבָֽחַרְתָּ֙ בַּחַיִּ֔ים...

"...I have set before you life and deaht, the blessing and the curse. You shaal choose life..."

One possible answer is that one should make a conscious choice to live and not just live in the rut of every day. A day without questioning whether the choices made can be appreciated by G-d. "Choosing to live" means choosing a meaningful life, a life focused on values and a higher purpose. Choosing to live consciously with the 7 Noahide Laws of God, and to observe their details, such as charity and respect for parents.

It is the month of Elul, the month in which we take stock of our behaviour over the past year and look ahead to the coming year in which we want to improve ourselves.

As we go forward on Rosh HaShana, under the shepherd's crook of G-d, we want to do so as best we can. Knowing that when we close our eyes at the end of our lives here, we will know that we have made a difference in the world. That the world looks a little better than it did before. That we have helped to make a dwelling place for G-d.
