Why Must We Believe in the Messiah?

13 Principles of Torah-based Faith that were enumerated by Rambam (Maimonides):

12. I fully believe that the Messiah will definitely come and though he may also be a long time off I expect his coming every day.

Maimonides codified belief in the Moshiach as one of the essential principles of Jewish faith. At the beginning of his Mishne Torah, he writes that "one who does not believe in him, or who does not await his coming, denies not only the prophets, but also the Torah and Moses our Teacher."

The prophets speak of the coming of the Messiah and the Messianic age. Since the Tanakh talks about it, it is actually logical to believe in the Messiah. Faith in this we can perhaps also see primarily as the hope that if Messiah has not come at the end of this day, that he will be there tomorrow, because he is the Jewish leader who will rise up and restore the monarchy of David as it was in earlier times. It is he who:

Gather in the disperse of Israel, and will teach the people about HaShem and provide awareness and knowledge about G-d. This awareness and knowledge will result in a Universal worship of G-d. Which will result in a world without wickedness and sin. Through this, there will be peace and harmony in creation. Sickness and death will cease to exist, and after a certain period of time the dead will be resurrected.

He will see to it that the Temple is rebuilt and that sacrifices, the Sabbath, and jubilees are observed. He will make sure that every Jew is Torah observant and every Noahide will observe his 7 Noahide Laws.

When all Jews keep their commandments from the Torah and all Noahide keep their commandments from the Torah with heart, soul and all their strength for the honour and glory of HaShem, the purpose for which HaShem created the world has come to its full fruition. An ultimate unity and relationship with His Creation. A Creation in which He is our King and our Father.
