Parashat Bereshit Chapter 1
The Second Day of Creation
6. And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, and let it be a separation between water and water.”
7. And God made the expanse and it separated between the water that was below the expanse and the water that was above the expanse, and it was so.
8. And God called the expanse Heaven, and it was evening, and it was morning, a second day.
6. And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water”: “Expanse” is an object that is spread out like a curtain, to separate between the [upper and lower] waters. At first, the waters covered the entire Earth, and only on the Third Day did the “dry land appear”, and on the Second Day God made a separation in the midst of the waters -between the waters below that are located on the Earth, and the waters above them, that may be found in the Heavens. And this “expanse” is the making of the Heavens.
