May A Man Seclude Himself With A Woman?

Topic Chapter 7:1 - 7:3



It is forbidden for a man to seclude himself with another man's wife, or with a woman who has at any time been a wife of his father or with his daughter-in-law or mother-in-law. It is permitted for a man to be secluded with his mother, daughter, granddaughter or grandmother and be secluded with his sister in a "temporary" fashion.

What does in a "temporary" fashion means exactly?

This means that it is permitted to even sleep over for one night, or even a few nights, as a guest in an home that belongs to the other person, but not in a permanent fashion. It appears that they need to sleep in separate rooms, in which case this is permitted even if the house is locked, adn even if their bedrooms are not locked. However, they should not sleep in the same room, since that would be immodest. (p.464)
